Based on a recurring internal monologue,
Separation grapples with the desire to believe
the lie you tell others. This dilemma is echoed
throughout the song with optimism in the
verse, quickly extinguished by the bleak realism
in the chorus. Coleman’s charming eclecticism
gives way to a cold, artificial voice of self-
doubt.
lyrics
Pretending is the simple part
After all this could it ever feel hard?
But self-deception for the faint of heart
It felt protective that’s the hardest part
So we pretend we can go on like this when we can’t
Telling lies
I thought I had something dear,
But you just had no idea
I got this, you got this
Separation, sincere
Pretending is the simple part
(But so is losing but so is old excuses)
And I don’t know if I can stop my heart
(Or should I cool it? But everyone seems foolish from time to time)
We never wanna talk about
I only ever wanna talk about it with you
We pretend we can go on like this when we can't
I thought I had something dear,
But you just had no idea
I got this, you got this
Separation sincere

Separation was created on Wurundjeri land. I pay my respects to the commmunity's elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be.
